Join Carol Trejo Kroeger, LCPC, for a 12 week DBT group to educate participants in the skills to better manage emotions and ease conflict in relationships.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy teaches the skills of “mindfulness”, “distress tolerance”, “emotional regulation” and “effective interpersonal skills” in order to improve understanding of our selves and communication with others.
Mindfulness: Learn to “anchor in the present” and increase non judgemental awareness of thoughts and feelings. This skill challenges depression’s focus on the past and anxiety’s focus on the future to reduce emotional distress and suffering.
Distress Tolerance: Learn to “be comfortable with being uncomfortable”. Pushing away uncomfortable emotions only makes them stronger and seem insurmountable. Practicing sitting with discomfort and challenging unhelpful avoidance patterns increases the belief that we can handle difficult tasks. Sitting with discomfort allows us to consider next steps and is empowering.
Emotional Regulation: Learn to “ride the wave”. This skill teaches how to allow feelings to come and go naturally without increasing them or engaging in destructive behaviors. This allows us to feel all of our feelings while reducing impulsivity and increasing intentionality in our actions.
Interpersonal effectiveness: Learn to increase respect of self and others to encourage connection and healthier relationships. Increase trust, boundaries and conflict resolution to create a healthy support system.
All of the skills build on each other to create a sense of hope and connection with both self and others.
This 12 week group will meet in person at the BBHW offices in Palatine, Illinois. Participants are required to attend no less than 11 sessions and work with an outpatient therapist. Participants will be required to sign a “release of information” agreement so the group facilitator may coordinate care.
Each participant will be contacted directly prior to the beginning of the sessions for an initial assessment by the group facilitator.
